Stomach Ulcer Treatment in Saudi Arabia

Stomach Ulcer, also known as gastric ulcer, is a condition characterized by open sores that develop on the inner lining of the stomach. These ulcers occur when the thick layer of mucus that protects the stomach from digestive acids is reduced, allowing the acids to eat away at the tissues lining the stomach. The most common cause of stomach ulcers is an infection with the bacterium Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). Long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and aspirin, can also lead to stomach ulcers by breaking down the stomach's mucus lining.

Symptoms of a stomach ulcer can vary but often include burning or gnawing pain in the abdomen, particularly between meals or at night. Other symptoms may include bloating, heartburn, nausea or vomiting, and a feeling of fullness. In severe cases, the ulcers can cause vomiting of blood, dark or bloody stools, and unexplained weight loss. It's important to seek medical attention if you experience any of these severe symptoms, as they could indicate complications like a bleeding ulcer or perforation in the stomach wall.

Treatment for stomach ulcers usually involves medication and lifestyle changes. Doctors often prescribe proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) or H2-receptor antagonists to reduce stomach acid and allow the ulcer to heal. If H. pylori infection is present, a combination of antibiotics will be required to eradicate the bacteria. Additionally, patients are advised to avoid NSAIDs and follow a diet that reduces stomach irritation, such as avoiding spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol. In rare cases, surgery may be needed if the ulcer does not respond to other treatments or complications arise. With proper medical care, most stomach ulcers heal effectively, allowing individuals to lead normal lives free of pain and discomfort.
