Uterine Fibroids consultation

Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or on the uterus. They are also known as leiomyomas or myomas and are quite common among women of childbearing age. These growths can vary greatly in size, from tiny seedlings that are not detectable by the human eye to bulky masses that can distort and enlarge the uterus.

Symptoms of uterine fibroids differ depending on the number, size, and location of the fibroids. Many women might not experience any symptoms at all. However, common symptoms include heavy menstrual bleeding, menstrual periods lasting more than a week, pelvic pressure or pain, frequent urination, difficulty emptying the bladder, constipation, and backache or leg pains.

Treatment for uterine fibroids depends on the severity of the symptoms and the size of the fibroids. Many instances do not require treatment unless the fibroids cause discomfort or other health issues. In cases where treatment is needed, options include medications to regulate hormones, non-invasive procedures like MRI-guided focused ultrasound, and minimally invasive procedures such as uterine artery embolization that cuts off blood supply to the fibroids. In more severe cases, surgical options like myomectomy, which removes the fibroids while keeping the uterus intact, or hysterectomy, which removes the entire uterus, may be considered. Always consult with a healthcare provider to determine the best course of action.
