A middle ear infection, also known as otitis media, is a common condition where the area behind the eardrum becomes inflamed, often due to bacteria or viruses. This type of infection is particularly prevalent in children but can occur in people of all ages. It usually develops when the Eustachian tube, which connects the middle ear to the back of the throat, becomes swollen or blocked, leading to trapped fluid.

Symptoms of a middle ear infection can vary but often include ear pain, difficulty hearing, and a feeling of fullness in the ear. Some people may also experience fluid drainage from the ear and a fever. Children with a middle ear infection might be irritable, have trouble sleeping, or tug at their ears more frequently than usual. If the infection is severe, it can cause balance problems or temporary hearing loss.

Treatment for a middle ear infection depends on the severity of the symptoms and the underlying cause. Often, the infection will resolve on its own within a few days, and over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage discomfort. In cases where the infection is caused by bacteria, a doctor may prescribe antibiotics. It's important to complete the full course of antibiotics if prescribed, even if symptoms improve before the medication is finished. In severe or recurrent cases, a doctor may suggest inserting ear tubes to help drain fluid and prevent future infections.
