Tendon rupture consultation

A tendon rupture is an injury where a tendon, which connects muscles to bones, tears partially or completely. This can occur suddenly or develop over time due to wear and tear. Common causes include overuse, injuries during sports, or accidents. Tendon ruptures can affect various parts of the body, with common sites including the Achilles tendon in the ankle and the rotator cuff tendons in the shoulder.

Symptoms of a tendon rupture often include a sudden, sharp pain at the site of injury, followed by swelling and bruising. You might also hear or feel a snap or pop at the moment of the tear. Afterwards, it can be difficult or impossible to move the affected area normally, and there might be noticeable weakness. For example, if your Achilles tendon is ruptured, standing on tiptoe or walking may become very painful or impossible.

Treatment for a tendon rupture depends on the severity of the injury. Minor tears might heal with rest, ice, and physical therapy to strengthen the surrounding muscles. More severe ruptures often require immobilization with a brace or cast and may need surgical repair to reattach the ends of the tendon. Recovery can be a gradual process that includes both rest and specialized exercises to regain full function.
